ONIX Albatross 1160 Pumpfoil next level

Review by Nicolas:

Off topic, so I’ll do a river clean up tomorrow to compensate, but daymn that albatross 1160 is a fun toy!

Tbh I was quite sceptical about it at first and contemplating whether it was stupid to by such a foil: would it be fun to ride and turn, won’t it be wobbly with my 88kg and alu mast, isn’t it boring to go back to bigger foils,…? None off it. Took it out today in 5/15 knots on the flat and had a blast:

  • Easy to get going because it responds very well to leg pumping.
  • Turns and carves surprisingly much better than you would think, comparable to the osprey 1250 but you need to commit to the arc you set (as with all high aspect foils).
  • Plenty stiff under foot.
  • No issues when breaching the tips.
  • much faster than you’d expect, I clocked 33km/h on a 5m and the foil can for sure be pushed harder in stronger winds.
  • consequently it also shoots upwind similarly to the osprey 950.
  • and of course, it has heaps of pump and glide! Useful in light conditions of course.

Until today, I rarely did tacks because my succes rate was not that good. Today I flew through all the tacks! The foil has so much glide and carries so much speed that you really have all the time in the world to bring the wing over your head and to sheet in again.

Can’t wait for a swell session!

Bottom line:

  • this is a great foil for those who enjoy a smooth “longboard” style of riding. It has plenty of versatility to offer for that rider. For me this makes a perfect quiver with the osprey 950.
  • if you’re an agressive rider, nothing beats the osprey 750
